Easy DIY Monster Spray to the Rescue!

My little guy turned 2 this year and we have encountered some new and interesting challenges. Like, when he has an absolute meltdown out of nowhere about being put in his crib and screams for nearly an hour with me going in his room every few minutes try to calm him down. This is super weird because we typically have very peaceful bedtimes.

Easy DIY Monster Spray Recipe (and Printable Label!) - A Mom's Take (1)

Being a first time mom and it took me a day of researching mommy blogs to realize that he might just be scared of the dark! What was so strange was it just developed in the middle of the night, from totally fine to crying in fear. Monster fears are totally normal at a young age, and with them bad dreams or simply having a hard time falling asleep. But don’t let nighttime fears of monsters stop your toddler in their tracks!

Anyways, I found some suggestions about a Monster Spray, and how you can pretend that mom’s super awesome smelling spray will drive the scary monsters away. What a good idea to take control of the situation in a fun and safe way — I knew I had to have it! Monster spray is a creative way to help your child overcome their fears!

How to Make a Monster Spray

This is what I used to create my own DIY Monster Spray!

What You Need to Make a DIY Monster Spray:

  • Glass jar (I re-purposed a 32oz apple juice jar)
  • A 60 ml glass spray bottle
  • Distilled Water
  • ¼ cup isopropyl alcohol (you can also use witch hazel)
  • Lavender essential oil

Alternate Monster Spray Recipe Idea:

If you don’t have lavender on hand, my favorite alternate to use is peppermint extract! Many people have that on hand for holiday recipes or you can use peppermint essential oil. Essential oil monster sprays are as easy as picking your favorite oil for the benefits you’re looking for! Just fill a spray bottle and add peppermint extract or essential oils. It creates an “effective” monster repellent that smells good, too!

How to Make Your Monster Spray:

Add the water until almost full.

Using Your Anti-Monster Spray:

The best way to use this is to pour some monster spray solution into small spray bottle and you are ready to go! This also makes for a delish linen spray (see below!)

I chose lavender essential oil because traditionally it has been used for it’s calming and sedative properties, which really, is exactly what I want when dealing with a panic stricken baby! 🙂

It will store for basically forever – just shake a couple times to remix the ingredients if it’s been a while since you’ve used your monster spray last. Keep your monster spray handy in a safe place where you and your child can use it together in the evenings, and reapply as needed to keep those pesky monsters away!

How to Make Monster Spray Work Like a Dream!

The trick to making your monster spray actually repel monsters is all in the presentation. Talk up your secret solution that vanquishes all monsters and keeps them away for good. Don’t be afraid to spray your monster spray about liberally. Let your child help point out places that you missed, so they are certain there’s a good coverage around the room. If you believe in the spray, they will buy right into it and follow along! Make it fun, exciting, and most of all talk about it’s success the next day.

Here are some places to make sure you don’t miss spraying:

  • Spray the top of door frames in entryways and around windows to keep monsters out.
  • Spray a light mist around the room before bed to ward off any nighttime visitors.
  • Spray the bed linens – pillows, blankets, sheets – this will help your child calm to sleep!
  • Of course, don’t forget to spray under the bed and any closets!

Other Uses for This Monster Spray Recipe:

Bonus: Here are some other ideas for this spray as well.

  • A beauty aid. Lavender is great for the skin and this can be used as a tonic water. Mist lightly on your face after washing and before moisturizing. Wait a minute for it to soak in and then proceed with the rest of your beauty routine.

  • Bug bite remedy. Lavender is an antihistamine and can reduce itching and swelling in insect bites. Spray on area and repeat as necessary.

  • Laundry refresher. You can add pour some of the solution from your storage jar into the rinse cycle to help sent clothes with Lavender. You can also spritz your clothes as you iron them.

  • Room Spray. What a great way to freshen up the room (with or without monsters!) Just spritz a few sprays and you’re on your way to a refreshed smelling space.

Free Printable Monster Spray Label

I’ve had a couple of readers as about a printable label for this monster spray. So, I set out to make a cute and colorful label you can print! To save this image, just right click and save image as and choose the location and name for the file to save it to your phone or computer.

Then, you can print out printable monster spray labels on plain paper and tape it your spray jar, or print on label paper! Just resize the image to fit your needs and then cut down the label if it’s a little too wide or too tall, based on whatever labels you decide on for your project size. On a spray bottle, you can label it sidewise (up the length of the bottle) to better fit the label! Of course, you can always use your own label, like I originally did! Even just a piece of masking tape and a sharpie works!

Now, you’re ready to chase away all the bedtime monsters and other scary things to bring back restful nights with your little ones happily sleeping in their own beds!
